UM pioneer missionary in Meru, Kenya, 1913-1922 and 1928-1933. He took a crash course in medicine before sailing and within months of arriving had opened a dispensary. He ran a boarding school which thrived in spite of a fire in 1914 in which five of the first twelve boys died. The first baptisms were in 1916. During an interval in home circuits he continued translating the Gospels into Kimeru. He supervised the opening of a hospital at Maua in 1928-1929 and of a girls' boarding school at Kaaga in 1933.
