YMA resulted in 1953 from a merger of the Girls' and Young Men's Leagues with the aim of reaching all in Methodism's burgeoning work with young people, to make them aware of contemporary Methodism's missionary achievements and challenges. From its London headquarters and through its Conferences and the local activities of YMA secretaries and affiliated groups, it was hoped by study, activity and service to make young people more aware and supportive of all aspects of missionary work. When the Divisions were instituted in the 1974 restructuring, both MCOD and DEY were involved in what became the World Affairs Youth (WAY) programme.
