Born in London in 1939, he received a BA at Durham University and a teaching certificate at Westminster College, before training for the ministry at Handsworth College, where he remained as Assistant Tutor from 1967 to 1970. He was Free Church Chaplain at the University of Keele from 1990 to 1999. He has published studies of F.J.A. Hort (1988) and Brooke Foss Wescott (2004) and contributed entries on them to the Oxford DNB. He retired in 2004.
