Pioneer PM missionary to Central Africa, he was born on 21 June 1864 at Otley, the son of a surveyor and educated at Dr. S.R Kerr's collegiate school. At 16 he entered a Leeds solicitor's office and three years later the counting house of a manufacturer. From 1889 to 1902 he served in Central Africa. Noted as a linguist, he wrote of his experiences in A Missionary Outpost in Central Africa (n.d., c1910-15). He was Missionary Financial Secretary, 1919 to 1924 and Secretary of Methodist Chapel Aid, 1925 to 1936. He died on 20 July 1937.
