Born in Manchester, he was educated at local schools in Adlington and Poynton, and subsequently at the Manchester College of Science and Technology. He was apprenticed as a bookbinder before entering Hartley Victoria College to prepare for the ministry. He served circuits in Hull, Retford and Bristol, in the last of which he oversaw the merging of the Bristol Mission and Kingswood circuits and the development of the shop front ministry at the Bristol Methodist Centre. In 1978 he became Synod Secretary and in 1987 Chair of the District. He was Moderator of the Bristol Free Church Council 1989-93 and Chair of Governors of Kingswood School 1995-8. In 1998 he was appointed Chair of the Channel Islands District and superintendent of the Jersey circuit. He was elected President in 2002-3 and became a supernumerary in 2004.
