Lockwood, Abraham
1792-1871

A quaint and popular Yorkshire MNC local preacher, he was born at Lockwood, Huddersfield, the son of a cloth dresser, on 3 November 1792. He took part in Luddite machine-breaking and came close to being imprisoned. His conversion brought about a remarkable change in him and 'Little Abe', as he was known from his stature, became associated with the now demolished Salem MNC, Berry Brow, near Huddersfield, which at its peak had one of the largest memberships in the Connexion. Such was his influence, he became known as the 'Bishop of Berry Brow'. He died on 1 November 1871 and was interred in the Salem graveyard, where his monument remains.
