Born at Wooldale, West Riding on 26 June 1840, he entered the PM ministry in 1865. With a BD degree, he was one of the few of his PM ministerial contemporaries to be a graduate. He was a prolific writer and controversialist, with over forty titles on such topics as baptism, death, eternal damnation and the immortality of the soul, the existence of God, infidelity, child training, teetotalism, and the Catholic Apostolic Church. He took a considerable interest in social matters and with the financial generosity of W.P. Hartley was able to bring relief to striking miners. In 1906 he superannuated to Heacham , Norfolk where he served for a time as an elementary school manager and with the support of the Quaker banker Lord Peckover took an interest in the adult education movement. In retirement he had little to do with the PMs. He died on 26 December 1914.
