Vice-President of the Conference 2013-14, was born in Lahore in 1946 and studied medicine at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, and then at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the London School of Economics, gaining the degrees of MB, BS, DTPH and MSc. He held appointments in India at Andhra Pradesh, Dichpalli and Vellore from 1972 to 1985, becoming General Secretary of the Christian Medical Association of India in 1985. From 1994 he held appointments in Urban Rural Mission and in Health, Community and Justice at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, before being appointed as Director of Christian Aid in London in 1998. He retired in 2010. He was Chair of the Overseas Development Institute, 2010-2012, Chair of Y Care International, 2010-15, and was a governor of the London Metropolitan University, until 2015. He is presently a member of the Court of Governors of the London School of Economics. He was appointed a board member of Action for Children in 2014 and is Patron of the Friends of the Church in India. He is a Local Preacher and holds honorary degrees of the Universities of Aberdeen and Roehampton. He was made an honorary OBE in 2013.
