Prolific artist, born in
Bolton, Lancs, he was educated at London University and the Slade School of Art and won a scholarship to the British School at Rome. His drawings appeared in such newspapers as the
Sunday Times, the
Guardian and between 1962 and 1990 in a column he wrote and illustrated for the
Daily Telegraph. Many drawings of chapels etc. also appeared in the
Methodist Recorder. A prolific writer, the best known of his many books,
The London Nobody Knows (1962) was made into a documentary film in 1967.
