The first Wesleyan chapel was built on St. Mary's Steps in 1832. It was enlarged before 1851, when the Religious Census recorded that it would accommodate about 250, and was replaced by Cartway chapel in 1853. In 1962 the Methodist and United Reformed congregations joined to form a united church at Cartway.'
