An active outdoor evangelist and popular Yorkshire preacher described by John Wesley as 'rough as Will Darney [but] much changed for the better'. Ordained by Bishop Erasmus, he insisted on wearing a gown. After Wesley expelled him in January 1765, he led a secession in Sheffield and became Independent minister of the Scotland Street chapel. He invited Alexander Kilham there in 1796 and it became MNC after his death.
