BC preacher and missionary in Australia, born in Huckworthy, Devon, the son of a miner. He went down the mine at 10, was converted at 16, became a local preacher and trained for the ministry at Shebbear College. He was sent to Adelaide, South Australia in 1884, where his most important ministry was the establishment of the Adelaide Central Mission, with its vigorous social and evangelistic work. He established the Mission's Children's Homes. The Sunday evening service, with his evangelical preaching and powerful congregational singing, attracted 1,000 worshippers weekly. He preached in the open air, broadcast regularly and contributed to the Australian Christian Commonwealth. He was President of the BC Australian Conference in 1897 and of the South Australian Conference in 1912.
