He was a Methodist soldier who, while quartered in Dunbar in 1759, was asked to teach the inhabitants 'church-musick' and when in Aberdeen taught the congregation of Monymusk Kirk the novel style of four-part singing by 1761. This took on and he was invited to introduce it in other kirks, providing perhaps the most fruitful effect of Methodism on the Scottish Church in that century.
