Crompton, James
1836-1911; e.m. 1858

PM itinerant, born at Mosley Common, Greater Manchester, on 29 February 1836. He itinerated mainly in the north-west. Fifteen titles, including pamphlets, are credited to his authorship. Some, such as the pamphlet Church Tithes in England: a chat between two farmers (1885) have a political tone. Others, such as The Grotto: a tale of two parsons (n.d., but c.1890-1895) and The Bible and the Critics (1907) have a theological and scientific slant. In these he argued that faith was not threatened by science. He died on 23 November 1911.
