Davies, Sir William Howell, MP
1851-1932

WM layman, born on 13 December 1851 at Narberth, Pembs. He became a tanner and leather merchant in Bristol, where he was on the City Council from 1885, Mayor in 1896 and alderman from 1897. He was Chairman of the Finance Committee 1902-29 and of the Docks Committee 1899-1908, where he introduced the motion for the construction of the Avonmouth Dock. He was knighted in 1908. He was Liberal MP for Bristol South from 1906 to 1922. He died on 26 October 1932.
