Born at Drumsna in Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Converted from Roman Catholicism, he emigrated to America, and entered the ministry there in 1774. He was one of the 25 signatories to a declaration of the Conference of 1777 on the preservation of Methodist work during and after the War of Independence, and was one of the five appointed to a committee for the purpose. Lack of provision for ministers' families led him to leave the ministry and to continue as a local preacher. Some of his correspondence was published by W.W. Sweet.
