Dunwell, Joseph Rhodes
1807-1835; e.m. 1834

WM missionary who was hastily despatched to the Gold Coast (now Ghana) in response to a request for Bibles from a group of Christians meeting in Cape Coast. The swift decision to send not only books but a missionary enabled him to join the ship on its return voyage. Landing on New Year's Day 1835, he survived the climate for only six months, but encouraged the African 'Bible band' and laid foundations on which T.B. Freeman and others were to build from 1838. He died at Cape Coast on 24 June 1835.
