WM missionary, born at Deptford, Kent. He helped Barnabas Shaw begin work among black people in South Africa, spending 20 years (1817-1837), apart from two brief intervals, in Namaqualand. In later appointments he helped to establish 'Cape Coloured' people, including ex-slaves, in homes and trades in Somerset West (1837-1844) and was chaplain to Cape Coloured convicts engaged in road-building near George (1844-1848). He spent the rest of his ministry and of his life in Stellenbosch, where he died on 6 April 1868.
