Independent Methodist minister with the Unevangelised Fields Mission 1928-72, supported by the IM Connexion. He worked among Amazonian Indians and in 1935 undertook a search for three missing missionaries in the Xingu River and opened up a new area of work with hitherto undiscovered tribes. He and his wife Eva Banner (née Tristram) established new mission stations in the region. In 1962 the social and humanitarian aspects of his work were recognized by the Brazilian government and he was awarded honorary citizenship. He translated hymns and Bible portions into Indian languages. In 1997 a NT translation was completed in the Kayapo language, which he had been the first to commit to writing.
