He was born in London and educated at the King's School, Macclesfield. He worked for the Inland Revenue before candidating and training for the ministry at Handsworth College. He served on the connexional Local Preachers' Committee from 1968 to 1978. Besides articles and sermons in such periodicals as the Expository Times and the Epworth Review, he published Come to Terms (1979). HP 71, based on part of Ps.139, was written in 1951 while he was a student at Handsworth, but did not survive into Singing the Faith.
