Jones, William Ernest, CBE
1895-1973

Trade unionist and local preacher, born at Renishaw, Derbys, on 14 April 1895. He went down the pit at the age of 14, made his way up through the ranks of the National Union of Mineworkers, becoming its Vice-President in 1950 and President 1954-60, also serving on the General Council of the TUC 1950-1960. He received an OBE in 1945 and a CBE in 1961; also an honorary LLD at Leeds in 1961. He died on 19 July 1973.
