WM Book Steward from 1899 to 1907 was born at Salford on 25 November 1833. During this time the name of the Book Steward was introduced as an imprint, a practice discontinued in 1948. He was President of the Conference in 1889 and again in 1905. His Memories (1910) throw interesting light on the introduction of lay representation in the WM Conference. As Secretary of the WM Sunday School Union he co-operated with W.B. Fitzgerald in forming the Wesley Guild. In retirement he was a regular visitor at Wandsworth Prison. He died on 5 April 1911.
