A Sergeant in the Light Dragoons, born in Wokingham (Berks), he was converted by George Morley. While stationed in Cape Town in 1806 he helped establish a society on the strict Methodist pattern, which flourished despite official disapproval and the regimental officers' fear of 'enthusiasm' in the ranks.
