Stampe, George
1836-1918

WM layman, born in May 1836 at Tetney, Lincs. He became a timber merchant in Grimsby and was in business there for 60 years. His chief interest was in collecting books, letters, pamphlets, portraits etc. relating to John Wesley and early Methodism. He was a founder member of the Wesley Historical Society and its treasurer for many years. He gave considerable help to Nehemiah Curnock in preparing his Standard Edition of Wesley's Journal. He died at Grimsby on 11 December 1918.
