Born at Doddington, Northumberland. After a minimal education he began work at the age of 8 at Bideabout Pit and subsequently at a number of mines and collieries, ending at Cambois colliery. Here he became secretary of the Aged Mineworkers' Association and was also active in a variety of local and political roles, including membership of the Morpeth Board of Guardians and treasurer of the Morpeth Liberal Association. Converted in a local revival in the vicinity of Lowick, he was active as a PM local preacher and Sunday School teacher.
