Wright, John Gibbon
1822-1904; e.m. 1845

PM minister and missionary to Australia, born in Sculthorpe, Norfolk. He served in five PM circuits before emigrating to South Australia, where he was first stationed at Kooringa on the Burra Copper field. Because of the exodus to the Victorian gold fields, only two members were left, but he reopened the church and by vigorous evangelism had almost 200 members within three years. This was the first of eleven long and fruitful ministries in South Australia circuits, shaped by the PM tradition of camp meetings, open-air preaching and prayers for revival. He was President of the PM South Australia Assembly nine times between 1857 and 1891.
