Editor of the Times Educational Supplement 1969 -1989, born in North London in August 1926, the youngest of four boys. At Christ's College, Cambridge, he was awarded a first class in History. His wartime service in the Royal Navy was on minesweepers in the Mediterranean. Having considered a career in the Civil Service, and having come first in the entrance exam, he decided to follow a career in journalism, and began as a reporter for the TES. He wrote and edited a number of books related to education, including Educational Documents, England and Wales, 1816 to the present day (1965). He died on 15 June 2011.
