Shewell, Arthur
1863-1942

Liberal politician and temperance campaigner, born in London on 11 April 1863 and privately educated,. He was Interested in sociological and politico-economic studies, and for a time was Hugh Price Hughes' assistant at the West London Mission. He was elected to represent Huddersfield at a by-election in 1906, holding the seat until 1918. Amongst his published works was one jointly written with the Quaker, Joseph Rowntree, The Temperance Problem and Social Reform (1899), which advocated an alternative policy to prohibition. He died on 23 January 1942.
