Politician and temperance reformer, born in London on 11 April 1863, the son of John Viney Sherwell, an Anglican and coach maker, born at Modbury, Devon. Educated privately, he married Mary Whadcoat of Bodiam. In 1909.
Originally intending to enter the WM ministry, he became interested in sociological and politico-economic issues and literary work, especially in connection with the temperance movement. Along with his friend, the Quaker, Joseph Rowntree, he published a number of works, including The Temperance Problem and Social Reform (1899) and Life in West London (1901). He was elected at a by-election in 1906 to represent Huddersfield as a Liberal and continued until 1918 when he did not stand. During the First World War he was a conscientious objector He died on 13 January 1942.
