Born into a BC family at Horsham on 30 January 1897, he was shot through the eye at the Battle of the Somme, but studied at Mildmay College, London and worked for the YMCA before entering the UM ministry. He became well known for a telephone ministry (described in God Gave Me a Telephone, Evesham, 1957 and The Christian Telephone Ministry, 1962) which brought him as many as 3,500 calls a year and was taken over in 1974 by the Westminster Pastoral Foundation. He broadcast frequently on radio and TV. He also contributed a weekly column to the Chichester Observer for 28 years and wrote Preparation for Christian Healing (1960). He died at Redhill on 11 September 1988.
