Methodist local preacher and miners’ union official, born at Felling. At an early age he began working at Seghill Colliery, Northumberland. Progressing to deputy overman, he resigned after eight years in opposition to management methods he was told to enforce. Active in the Northumberland Miners Association, he was a branch delegate for three years, also served on the union executive and was President of the Association. After military service in France in the First World War he became active in the Labour Party, being elected to both Seghill and Northumberland County Councils. He died on 18 September 1940 when the SS City of Benares, carrying mainly children to safety in Canada, was torpedoed.
