Wesleyan Methodists
The first Wesleyan meetings began in 1834, some eight years after the scheme to develop St Leonard's as a seaside resort was launched. A chapel in Norman Road was opened in 1836, extended by W.W. Pocock in 1863, extended again in 1884, and replaced, after a devastating fire, in 1900-01. This building closed in 2008.
A school chapel in the Bohemia district of the town was replaced by a larger building in 1892 and this now houses the St Leonard's Methodist Church.
Primitive Methodists
The Primitive Methodists established chapels in Gensing Road (1862) and Newgate Road, Bohemia (1866-1939).
