Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey

John Wesley recorded that there was a society meeting in Staines and a house just fitted up for preaching by the time of his visit on 28 November 1771.

Wesleyan Methodists

A small chapel in Kingston Road, in existence by 1845, was enlarged in 1865 and replaced by a new building in 1889-90. Urban redevelopment led to the building of a new church in Thames Street in 1987-88. The foundation stone was laid by Eric Goldhawk, using the same mallet used by his great-grandmother to lay a foundation stone in 1890.

Primitive Methodists

Open-air services in the 1870s preceded worship in the Academy, Gresham Road, and then a PM chapel in Richmond Road, opened in 1878. A little over a decade later, this chapel closed, following the opening of a PM chapel in Egham.
