Broadbent, Samuel
1794-1867; e.m. 1815

WM missionary, born on 27 October 1794 at Baistow near Sowerby Bridge. He served in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) 1815-1820 and in South Africa 1820-1825, where he shared in a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to establish work among the Barolong people at a time of local conflicts. He then had a long ministry in England and wrote a number of books including biographies of Andrew Armour and William Threlfall. He died at Lytham, Lancs on 3 June 1867.
