Born in 1935, he was educated at Oxford University and Richmond College. He taught theology in East Nigeria, 1962-67 and at Loughborough 1969-78. He was Secretary of the British Council of Churches Committee for Relations with People of Other Faiths 1978-88 and was involved in numerous inter-faith bodies. From 1995 he served as Director of Global Studies and Research Professor of Theology and Mission at Brite Divinity School, Fort Worth, Texas. The author of many books and articles on inter-faith dialogue, he was awarded the 2007 Grawemeyer award for his book In Good and Generous Faith: Christian responses to religious pluralism (2006). He died in Norwich, Vermont, on 26 October 2022.
