Born in 1935, he was educated at Oxford University and Richmond College. He taught theology in East Nigeria, 1962-67 and at Loughborough 1969-78. He was Secretary of the British Council of Churches Committee for Relations with People of Other Faiths 1978-88 and has been involved in numerous inter-faith bodies. Since 1995 he has been Director of Global Studies and Research Professor of Theology and Mission at Brite Divinity School, Fort Worth, Texas. He has written many books and articles on inter-faith dialogue and was awarded the 2007 Grawemeyer award for his book In Good and Generous Faith: Christian responses to religious pluralism (2006).
