Calvinistic Methodist preacher, born in October 1779 of religious parents at Pencader, Dyfed. At 16 he chose to join the Calvinstic Methodists rather than his parents' Independent chapel. He began to preach in 1796 and at 19 briefly attended the Presbyterian College at Carmarthen before being ordained deacon by the bishop of Llandaff. In each of the parishes he served his preaching drew large congregations, but his *enthusiasm and open-air preaching aroused opposition and he eventually returned to the Calvinistic Methodists, as well as continuing to preach among the Baptists and Independents. In his later years he suffered bouts of depression. He died on 6 October 1847.
