Gallagher, Ernest William
1918-1984; e.m. 1943

Missionary to India, born on 24 August 1918 at Kinsale, Co. Cork. After training at Edgehill College, Belfast, he was appointed to the Hyderabad District in 1943; then served in the Medak Diocese of CSI until 1966. His fluent Telugu enabled close relationships with local colleagues and the effective training of ordained and lay workers. On returning to Ireland in 1966 he served as General Secretary of MMS Ireland, as well as in other areas of the Church's life. His ministry was shared and enhanced by the educational work of his wife Muriel Gallagher (née Hyman), a Women's Workmissionary. He was President of the Irish Conference in 1981 and became Principal of Edgehill College in 1982 He died in Belfast on 21 February 1984.
