Haigh, Dr Henry
1853-1917; e.m. 1874

WM Missionary in India, born at Ossett, near Leeds on 26 June 1853. He served in Mysore from 1874 to 1903. An accomplished Kanarese scholar, he founded and edited a Kanarese newspaper and was reviser-in-chief of the Kanarese Bible. From 1903 to 1912 he was Chairman of the Newcastle District and was President of the Conference in 1911. A General Secretary of the Missionary Society from 1912, he died in Hankow on 14 July 1917, during a visit to China. 'He had the mind of a statesman, building his policies on deep and sagacious principles.'
