WM missionary in India, he was born at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 31 August 1883 and trained at Handsworth College. During his ministry in the Hyderabad District 1906-19, he laid particular emphasis on lay evangelists as key figures in the Mass Movements. Espousing Indian independence, he urged equal status for women and Christian emancipation of the lower castes. As Home Organization Secretary of the (W)MMS from 1927 to 1948 he worked with his colleagues to transform the old Mission House regime into a united family team. He died at Sevenoaks on 18 March 1966.
