Born on 14 November 1910 at South Clifton, near Newark. He trained for the ministry at Richmond College and Marburg University. In 1947 he became Tutor in Theology at Hartley Victoria College, and as Principal (1960-73) unsuccessfully opposed the closure of the college. He was a member of the Faculty of Theology of Manchester University. His wide-ranging interests included industrial mission, youth camps, Rotary, Probus and soccer, and as an ardent supporter of the club he conducted the memorial service at Old Trafford after the Manchester United air disaster in 1958. He died in Manchester on 25 January 1991.
