Missionary in India, born in Liverpool. He trained at Didsbury College. He served in the Lucknow and Banares District 1919-22 and from 1934 to 1946 taught at the Henry Martyn School of Islamic studies, also serving as secretary and Chairman of the North India Provincial Synod. He received his DD from Serampore College in 1948. As Professor of Islamic Studies at the Selly Oak Colleges 1947-62, his expertise, demonstrated in his Islam and Christian Theology (1946-51), was widely acknowledged, as was his charming, wise and stimulating personality. He died at Bournville, Birmingham on 21 May 1966.
