Griffiths, Edward Henry
1919-2014; e.m. 1942

Welsh author and hymn-writer, educated at Handsworth College and Bangor. His ministry was in Welsh-speaking circuits in north Wales and Liverpool. In 1967-68 he published a two-volume life of the pacifist Calvinistic Methodist minister George Maitland Lloyd Davies (1880-1949) and in 1986 an extensive study of the historian and Wesleyan minister Lot Hughes. He is a gifted translator of hymns into Welsh. The interdenominational hymn book Caneuon Ffydd ('Songs of Faith', 2001) includes six of his translations, including Welsh versions of Joseph Hart's 'This, this is the God we adore', Charles Wesley's 'And can it be' and Frances J. van Alstyne's 'To God be the glory'. In recognition of the quality of his translations and his writing about hymns he was made a Fellow of Cymdeithas Emynau Cymru (The Welsh Hymn Society) in 2005.
