Born at Thornaby-on-Tees, he took an MA in Maths at Cambridge and taught in Southampton, where he met his future Wife, Morwenna Bielby. In 1949 he was appointed headmaster of Huddersfield College. He served on the British Council of Churches' working party on 'Sex and Morality' and was the first non-university man to become a vice-chairman of the Joint Matriculation Board. In retirement he taught part-time in the Department of Education at Leeds University. In addition to maths textbooks, he published Sixth Form Worship (1968), and Education through Worship (1969). He prepared lectures on chapel architecture for the Property Division and wrote a book on The Churches and Chapels of Kirklees (1978). He died on Good Friday, 4 April 1986.
