Born at Keighley on 4 June 1859, he emigrated to New Zealand in 1883 and entered the PM ministry there in 1889. At Methodist Union in 1913 he was given permission to serve as the Secretary of the New Zealand Temperance Alliance. He was President of the New Zealand Primitive Methodist Conference in 1898 and of its Methodist Conference in 1915.
