WM minister, born on 16 June 1903 at Thornton Heath. Trained at Didsbury College, he continued his musical studies after entering the circuit ministry and obtained a MusD. He was a fine pianist, a notable conductor and composer of anthems, cantatas, organ music and hymn tunes. He was ministerial secretary of the Methodist Church Music Society for 26 years, Professor of harmony and counterpoint at the London College of Music 1968-1975 and the first Principal of the Williams School of Church Music, Harpenden 1971-1975. This was a partial fulfilment of his conviction that there was a very real role for an ordained minister of music in the Methodist Church. He served on the editorial committees of the School Hymn-book (1950) and Hymns and Songs (1969) and edited The Choir magazine 1948-1964. Some of his hymn tunes are in Hymns and Psalms. He died on 19 September 1975.
